Radhadesh history: how château becomes a spiritual oasis

In 1979 Hare Krishna Amsterdam devotees acquired Château de Petite Somme in the Ardennes, and the old château became home to a community whose daily life, visitor program and cultural work have developed over decades [1]  The move took the community from the crowded streets and canal houses of Amsterdam into the countryside. But buying a château and building a center are different things. Keep the acquisition apart from the later work of construction, restoration and expansion, or a long process shrinks into the false impression of a complex that appeared all at once. [1]

Growth came in stages. None of this makes Radhadesh history in Belgium a museum piece. Radhadesh is a working spiritual community, with a temple, visitor facilities and events. Devotees come for its daily devotional life; other visitors may first meet the retreat center, the sacred art or the cultural program. A sensible introduction respects both motives without pretending that tourism, scholarship and religious practice are the same thing.

The Bhagavad-gītā speaks of honoring the source of all beings through one’s own work. Applied to a community site, the idea turns very practical: buildings need care, food must be prepared, visitors welcomed and cultural materials preserved. That is a theological reading of service, not a claim that any one development had a single motive.

“Our philosophy is ‘simple living and high thinking’—not sense gratification. Temple or asrama means for renunciation and renounced persons.”

— Śrīla Prabhupāda, letter to Kirtiraja, 12 January 1975. [2]
